They deal entirely with the “steps toward being” that the individual can take in order to learn the Art of Being. How can we realize and actualize Love, Reason, and meaningful, productive work?
Fromm here offers the Art of Being, a way of living based on authentic self-awareness that comes only through honest self-analysis. Wisely, he warns froom the pitfalls of our attaining enlightenment without effort, or believing that life can be lived without pain. The tantalizing “spiritual smorgasbord” offered by our consumer-oriented world, Fromm maintains, only feeds our illusions of “easy awareness.
If the Art of Being – the art of functioning as a whole person – can be considered the supreme goal of life, a breakthrough occurs when we move from narcissistic selfishness and egotism – from having – to psychological and spiritual happiness – being. The Art of Being will be one of the most important works in the Fromm canon for years to come.

Doully Ayq yes, ’cause this book is talking about one of the things he wrote about in “to have or to be”. Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Usually I erm and ahh over giving one more star or taking one away. The earlier sections, where he writes about the malaise of modern man, his alienation, his perverse notion of successful, his powerlessness, was probably fresher in the 70s than it is now.
Who reads a book like this without thinking that in the first place? I liked the bit about dream analysis too. I began zivljrnja we were ziivljenja in Woody Allen territory with the funny examples he offered but further reading had me wondering about my dreams. The long discussion on the three isms – Buddhism, Marxism, Freudism – I found a bit tiring. But Freud, the anal man? It lacked clarity, it too often missed out on explanation, it contained jargon, it laboured the point long after the point was made.
Listened to the audiobook version. The overarching concept of being vs having is a powerful one. However the book is overly formal and psychoanalytical in nature. It does a good job of dispelling the belief some may have in “new age gurus” to lead one to enlightenment and instead indicates that the key to personal fulfillment lies in grom awareness through meditation and self analysis and the casting away of a consumerist lifestyle hell bent on defining ones life by acquisition of things and a Listened to the audiobook version.
I don’t recommend this book unless you are a psychiatrist or fascinated with related topics. For a reader interested in a general personal development oriented book it is too arcanely written. The Nature of Psyche”.
This book was supposed to be included in “To Have or To Be”, but Fromm decided to publish two separate books to avoid confusions among the readers. For all his professing on freeing yourself from the confines of your narcissistic views, the author seems rather stuck in his own value judgements. While his considerations might have been relevant at some point, in this humble reader’s opinion, that is no longer the case. I read the whole thing–it wasn’t horrible–but it’s wrih chapters that were cut from Fromm’s To Have or To Be?
UMECE LJUBAVI ERIH FROM EBOOK
I have a feeling that’s a much better text, especially for a beginner. This was just really dry and jargony for me, not the quality of Art of Loving at all.
Erin though there were some good points made by the author about self-awareness, meditation and self-analysis I found that they were too few and not fully explored.
I also found that he focused too much on Sigmund Freud zivjenja karl marx to the point that this was zivluenja so much a book about the art of being as it was a book about Freudian and Marxist philosophies. Maybe that’s what the intent zzivljenja the book was supposed to be and I just didn’t realize it prior to reading it. For a much more helpful book that is not based on psychoanalysis philosophies which have a narrow focus, but is instead, based practical and powerful techniques you can use to improve your state of being and improve your life, I suggest reading The Power of Your Subconscious Mind I would’ve gotten more out of this book if it wasn’t too technical.
I believe that I really could have enjoyed this more if I was in a better situation or a more convenient time.
There are lot of good things to learn from frmo this book. One needs to completely concentrate when trying to go through this book. I picked up good points every now and then, but since it was too technical, it didn’t really stick with me. I felt like it was more of a classroom lecture than a leisure read as I I would’ve gotten more out of this book if it wasn’t too technical.
I felt like it was more of a classroom lecture than a leisure read as I intended it to be. I might give it feom shot in the future and I would probably rate it better next time.
Two modes of being are contrasted, one based on having, the other based on being, and various approaches are taken into consideration, from Buddhism to Marxism to Freud’s psychoanalysis. For a detailed review, please zivlienja my blog: It’s like zivljenjaa extension pack or DLC to “To have or to be”.
Mostly it’s a description of how not to be with an analysis of some extreme cases. Also there are some good practical advices to self-analysis and meditation.
Also a good review and classification of property types. But the book still looks like a draft as it is. I kept waiting for it to get to point – either I missed it or it wasn’t a relevant point to me. There was nothing very profound or insightful about this.

If this is being “asocial” or “irrational” in their eyes, so be it. Mostly they resent our freedom and our courage to be ourselves. We owe nobody an explanation or an accounting, as long as our acts do not hurt or infringe on them.
How many lives have been ruined by this need to “explain,” which usually implies that the explanation be “understood,” i. Let your deeds be judged, and from your deeds, your real intentions, but know that a free person owes an explanation only to himself—to his reason and his conscience—and to the few who may have a justified claim for explanation.
